I think I my have been a tomato in a past life or I am moving to become one. It is so hard to put into words how much people love tomatoes! And I am one of those people.
Tomatoes do best when grown direct from seed. I do not have such a luxury; our season is long but not that long. So we start our tomatoes inside 4-6 week before the last frost date. You can cheat a bit (and we do) buy a few of our tomato water walls and you can get up to month on the last frost date, and let me tell you, the guy with the first tomato around here is the talk of the town.
Start with healthy transplants, a weak plant will struggle and slow and reduce production. (For seed starting see how we grow from seed)
Pick a spot with good drainage and full sun or at least 8 hours. Tomatoes like an organic soil and will feeding heavy until they set fruit, so we add compost and water once a week with an organic fertilizer until flower set, then we just foliar feed. Foliar feeding helps fight off disease and tomatoes get a bunch of them. You will also want to not plant you plants close together and use a cage. (Like one of our folding cages.) We sucker our plants this means that as the plant grows upwards each branch has a will grow a branch out of the joint where it meets the main stem. We remove the bud or the stem that grows out of that junction. We remove all of these stems from the bottom of the plant all the way until you reach the first flower set then we stop.
That’s it eat tomatoes be happy.
