How We Grow

Ramps

Ramps, Allium tricoccum, are an edible plant that grows wild here on the front range of the Piedmont. Ramps or Wild Leeks are something we forage every spring. The season here is from early April till Mid May or what our friend the writer Rick Darke calls, “the season of long shadows.”
Ramps grow in lots of woodland conditions; we find them on the steep banks of our shady cool creek valleys. I also have some growing in a shady spot in garden soil and doing just great.
Ramps can be propagated in 3 ways, by collecting seeds, planting green plants or planting bulbs.  Growing ramps from seed can be challenging to say the least because they can take up to 18 months to germinate from seed. Even as seed savers 18 months in this modern fast moving world can seem like a life time. Even planting a single plant will take 3-5 years for the bulbs to divide and 2-3 years to produce flowers to collect more seeds that will take their good old sweet time germinating.
We use all 3 methods. We collect tons of seed, dig some bulbs and plant plants every spring. I love them in Frittata or pickled.
